Escape: The Most Underrated Physical Skill

How to break contact, move through crowds, and disengage from violent dynamics safely.

By Benjamin VorbachKnowledge Base

In physical protection, winning a fight is always secondary. The primary goal is to go home safely. Therefore, Escape is the most important physical skill you can develop.

The Philosophy of De-escalation

Avoid conflicts entirely. If you identify a potential confrontation, change direction, enter a public business, or walk away. Pride has no place in self-protection. De-escalate and disengage.

Tactical Movement

If caught in a volatile crowd or threat zone, keep your hands up (defensive frame), maintain balance, and move diagonally through crowds toward exits. Avoid walls and choke points.

"The best block is not being there to be hit. Disengage quickly, run, and put distance between yourself and the threat."
