Turn on the tap.
Water comes out.
For most of us, that is so normal that we rarely think about what happens if it doesn't.
But a disruption to the water supply does not require a major disaster. A burst pipe, contamination, technical failure, flooding, power outage or local infrastructure problem can be enough to temporarily interrupt access to safe drinking water.
And unlike many pieces of emergency equipment, water is not optional. You can live without electricity. You can go without food for a while. You cannot go long without water.
That makes water one of the most basic elements of personal preparedness. The good news? Preparing for it is remarkably simple. Don't Prepare for the Apocalypse
This is where preparedness often goes wrong. People imagine months without running water and conclude that preparing for it requires an enormous storage room filled with barrels.
It doesn't. Start with a much simpler question:
Could my household comfortably manage 72 hours without tap water?
That is a realistic first goal. Once you can answer yes, you can decide whether extending that capability makes sense for your circumstances.
Preparedness works best when it grows in layers. Just as you apply layers to protect your home (see our guide to Target Hardening), your resource reserve should follow a structured approach. Start with the most likely problems before preparing for the most extreme ones.
How Much Water Do You Actually Need?
A useful starting point for emergency planning is approximately: 3 liters of drinking water per person per day.
But drinking is only part of your water requirement. Water may also be needed for:
- preparing food
- basic hygiene
- brushing teeth
- washing hands
- cleaning
- pets
- medical needs
That means a practical household reserve should usually be larger than your drinking requirement alone.
For a family of four, three liters per person already means: 12 liters per day. For three days: 36 liters just for drinking. Add basic cooking and hygiene requirements and the amount increases quickly.
This is why emergency water planning should be based on your actual household, not a generic survival checklist.
Start With Drinking Water
If storage space is limited, prioritize potable water. Having enough water to drink is more important than storing large amounts for washing.
Bottled water is one of the simplest solutions. It is inexpensive, readily available and requires almost no preparation. You do not necessarily need specialized survival containers or expensive equipment to establish a basic emergency supply.
A few cases of bottled water stored appropriately can already give a household valuable resilience. Simple solutions are often the ones people actually maintain.
Store Water Properly
Water storage is not just about quantity. Location matters too.
Store drinking water in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and chemicals. Avoid locations where containers may freeze or experience extreme heat. Check commercially bottled water periodically for damaged containers or leaks and rotate supplies when appropriate.
If you fill your own containers, use containers specifically intended for drinking water. Do not reuse containers that previously held chemicals, cleaning products or other substances that could contaminate the water. Safe storage matters as much as having water in the first place.
Don't Put Everything in One Place
Preparedness benefits from redundancy. If your entire water supply is stored in one basement room and that room floods, you may lose all of it at once.
If possible, distribute supplies:
- the main reserve at home
- some water in another part of the house
- a smaller supply in your vehicle
- water in your emergency or evacuation kit
You don't need identical supplies everywhere. The principle is simply: Avoid unnecessary single points of failure.
Remember the People Who Need More
Generic recommendations are only starting points. Some members of your household may require more water than others. Consider:
- babies and young children
- elderly family members
- pregnant or breastfeeding women
- people with certain medical needs
- anyone doing significant physical activity
- hot weather conditions
And don't forget your animals. Dogs, cats and other pets need water too. A preparedness plan that covers you but forgets half the household isn't much of a plan.
Stored Water Is Only Layer One
Eventually, stored water runs out. That means a more resilient water plan should contain more than one option.
Think in layers:
- Layer 1: Stored drinking water — Immediate access without needing to process anything.
- Layer 2: Additional water sources — Other water available around you that may be usable depending on the situation.
- Layer 3: Water treatment — The ability to make questionable water safer when necessary.
This is where filters, boiling and appropriate water-disinfection methods become relevant. The important distinction is that clear water is not automatically safe water. Microorganisms and some contaminants cannot be identified simply by looking at the water.
Understand What Water Filters Can — and Cannot — Do
A common preparedness mistake is buying a water filter and assuming: “Now I can drink anything.”
Not necessarily. Different filtration systems remove different contaminants. Some are designed primarily for microorganisms. Others may reduce particulates or certain chemicals. A filter designed for backcountry water does not automatically make chemically contaminated industrial water safe to drink.
This matters particularly during flooding or infrastructure incidents where water may contain substances that ordinary outdoor filters were never designed to remove. Know what your equipment actually does. Equipment should solve a defined problem, not create false confidence.
Boiling Water Has Limitations Too
Boiling can be an effective method for dealing with many biological hazards. But boiling does not magically remove every possible contaminant. If water contains certain chemicals, fuels, heavy metals or other hazardous substances, boiling may not make it safe.
This is why official information during a local water emergency matters. If authorities issue a boil-water notice, follow those instructions. If they state that water should not be consumed at all, boiling it is not an alternative unless authorities specifically say otherwise. Preparedness includes knowing when not to improvise.
Water Isn't Only for Drinking
If the water supply stops, another problem quickly appears: sanitation.
Toilets. Hand washing. Cleaning. Food preparation. This is why non-potable water can still be extremely valuable.
Depending on the situation, water that is unsuitable for drinking may still have other uses. Keeping drinking water separate from utility water helps prevent wasting your most valuable supply on tasks that do not require potable water. Again, think in priorities. Not every task requires the same quality of water.
Use the Warning Time You Have
Many emergencies do not happen completely without warning. If severe weather, infrastructure problems or another disruption makes a water outage more likely, use the time available:
- Top up your drinking-water supply.
- Fill appropriate containers.
- Charge devices.
- Check your emergency information sources.
- Make sure everyone in the household knows what is happening.
Preparedness does not mean doing everything months in advance. Sometimes it means recognizing a developing problem early enough to act before everyone else suddenly needs the same resources. This is where active Situational Awareness pays off.
When the Water Comes Back
Running water returning does not necessarily mean it is immediately safe to drink. After some supply disruptions, authorities may issue instructions regarding flushing pipes, boiling water or waiting for testing to be completed.
Follow local guidance. If there is any uncertainty about contamination, don't assume that normal water pressure means normal water quality. Infrastructure recovery can happen in stages.
The 72-Hour Water Challenge
Here is a simple preparedness exercise:
Imagine the water stops right now. No warning. You cannot use the tap for the next 72 hours. Ask yourself:
- How much drinking water do we currently have?
- How many people need it?
- What about pets?
- Can we prepare food?
- How would we manage basic hygiene?
- What happens when the stored drinking water is gone?
You don't actually need to shut off your water for three days. The exercise alone will reveal most weaknesses in your plan. And once you know the weaknesses, they are usually inexpensive to fix.
Preparedness Begins With Ordinary Things
Emergency preparedness is often associated with specialized equipment. But resilience usually starts with much more ordinary resources: Water. Food. Light. Communication. Information. A plan.
You don't need to predict the disaster. You need enough flexibility to deal with disruption. Start small. Store enough safe drinking water for your household. Know how you could obtain more. Understand how to treat it. And periodically check that your plan still works.
Because preparedness isn't about expecting the world to end. It's about making sure a temporary problem stays a temporary problem.
Build Resilience Before You Need It
Water preparedness is one layer of a broader personal preparedness system. Emergency communication, backup plans, food, power, evacuation options and family planning all work together.
The objective is not complete independence from the outside world. It is to give yourself enough time and enough options to make good decisions when normal systems temporarily fail.
